Position Overview

HVWC is currently seeking a highly motivated individual to join their team as the Team Manager for Animal Husbandry and Conservation. This position offers a unique opportunity to oversee the maintenance of captive Australian native animals at the highest industry standards for conservation and research purposes. Reporting to the Manager of Threatened Species Conservation, the selected candidate will lead and supervise a team of dedicated wildlife scientists. The primary responsibilities of the role include ensuring the welfare of the animals, managing operations for a safe and compliant environment, maximizing breeding outcomes, and adhering to relevant codes, guidelines, and legislation.

Key Responsibilities

Animal Husbandry for Conservation and Research

In this role, you will be responsible for the hands-on management of Australian native threatened species, primarily mammals. You will work closely with the wildlife scientists to design, maintain, and enhance enclosures and infrastructure at HVWC. From ensuring proper nutrition and healthcare to implementing enrichment programs, your attention to detail and expertise in animal husbandry will contribute to the overall success of the center’s conservation and research efforts.

Team Leadership and Management

As the Team Manager, you will be at the helm of a high-performing team consisting of two permanent staff members and four or more casuals, students, and volunteers. Your leadership skills will shine as you build and lead this team, fostering an environment of collaboration, growth, and excellence. Implementing a shared 7-day per week roster, you will ensure smooth operations and efficient workflow within the Husbandry Department. Additionally, you will provide guidance, training, and mentorship to enhance the skills and knowledge of your team members, ensuring they are equipped with the tools to succeed in their roles.

Budget and Resource Management

Effective budget and resource management are crucial components of this position. You will be responsible for developing and managing budgets for animal husbandry and related field activities, meticulously allocating resources to maximize efficiency and effectiveness. Furthermore, you will procure necessary equipment, supplies, and services in a cost-effective manner, ensuring that the center has the resources it needs to care for and conserve the native Australian wildlife under its care.

Stakeholder Engagement

Collaboration is key to the success of HVWC’s conservation efforts. In this role, you will collaborate with educational institutions, local communities, government agencies, and environmental organizations. By actively engaging with these stakeholders, you will foster strong partnerships and work together towards a common goal – the preservation and protection of Australia’s unique wildlife. Requirements

To be considered for this role, you must have relevant right to work in Australia. Additionally, previous team management experience and experience as a Wildlife Keeper are desirable qualifications that will strengthen your application.
